A thriving neighborhood in Fort Bend County, with over 100 years of history.

The neighborhood of Sugar Land began in 1906 when the Imperial Sugar Company built its plant here. This marked the beginning of a company town, with Ike Kempner,  the owner of Imperial Sugar, owning most of the town. Kempner was a generous landlord and put much of the company’s profits back into the town.

By the 1950's, several of the surrounding neighborhoods had begun incorporating. Kempner agreed with several of the townspeople that the neighborhood needed to incorporate and he sold the homes owned by the company to their occupants at fair prices. In December 1959, Sugar Land residents elected their first mayor and city council, and the city of Sugar Land was born. Today, Sugar Land has a population of 63,320 and with its small town atmosphere and modern luxuries it is a fine place to raise a family. 

Sugar Land has four golf courses: Riverbend Country Club, Greatwood Golf Club, Sweetwater Country Club, and Sugar Creek Country Club. Each club features several amenities to its members.

Public Schools

Children living in the Sugar Land community go to schools in the Fort Bend Independent School District.

The Fort Bend Independent School District serves the Sugar Land area. Fort Bend ISD schools exceeded the state average on the 2008 TAKS and the district is continually striving to improve.

Higher Education

Sugar Land is served by Wharton Junior College, Houston Community College and the University of Houston System at Sugar Land. Through cooperation among various institutions of higher learning, the University of Houston System is able to offer Sugar Land residents the opportunity to earn 35 different bachelors and masters degrees without leaving their area.

Brazos River Park: Currently this 1,200 acre park along the banks of the Brazos River is under development. The master plan calls for the development of several smaller sub-parks with access to the river. The sub-parks will be connected by trails and will include playgrounds, picnic spots, and restrooms. 

The first section of the first sub-park has already been opened. Phase I of the Sugar Land Memorial Park spreads over 150 acres; the entire sub-park will spread out over 420 acres. Sugar Land Memorial Park’s entrance is at the intersection of University and Commonwealth Boulevards. A 2 ½ mile walking/jogging/biking trail is featured in the newly opened section of the park, as are a lake, picnic pavilion and playground. 

In 2007, 5000 trees were planted in the park  by volunteers in an effort to reforest the area, which was once used as farmland. Volunteers planted 10,000 more trees in 2008. These oaks and other native trees will one day provide a habitat for wildlife. 

More parks: The Sugar Land area features several other parks, including the 21-acre City Park on Seventh Street. This lovely park includes a 25-yard long pool with a 12 foot deep end for diving. The park also features five lighted baseball fields and a covered skate park pavilion complete with lights and bleachers. There are horseshoe pits, a sand volleyball area, covered picnic area, and a meeting room, as well as a children’s playground and four lighted tennis courts.

Golf Courses: Sugar Land has four golf courses: Greatwood Golf Club, Riverbend Country Club, Sugar Creek Country Club, and Sweetwater Country Club. Each club offers many amenities to its members. 

Sugar Land residents have several hospitals from which to choose, including Memorial Hermann - Sugar Land, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital, Sugar Land Medical Center, Triumph Hospital - Southwest, Sugar Land Surgical Hospital, and Sugar Land Rehabilitation Hospital.
